Please Switch to Firefox

Firefox is the only remaining ethical web browser.

I came across this blog post, In 2024, please switch to Firefox by Roy Tanck, and decided to do my share of advocacy.

I've been using Firefox for the past year and a half, and I'll list down my own reasons for using Firefox, but Roy makes a compelling argument better than I will. Please read that post, and if you find merit to his claims, and those of the people in the comment section, please switch - please.

Here are other resources that make a case for Firefox, I'll update this post if and when I find others.

My Reasons.

  • Speed.
In my web development setup, almost every tool that I rely on is a RAM-consuming monster. Be it VS Code, dev-servers, Figma, the rarely-used Docker, even the websites that I visit are greedy for my resources. Now, try placing Chrome, or any other Chromium-based browser, on top of all that, and your fans will scream the end-times. Firefox, at least in my opinion, doesn't consume a lot of resources on my device.

As an exercise, trying searching online if Chrome consumes your RAM/resources even when closed?

  • Dev Tools.
I don't know how to communicate this because I'm not an expert at using them, but Firefox has the best developer tools I've seen, and heard of from other people's recommendations.

  • Privacy.
This has been mentioned in that post, and will add to it, except that, Firefox paired with the uBlock Origin extension, at the very least, gives some comfort when browsing the web. Also, like most people, I hate popups and the like.

  • Ethics.
This has also come up, and expressed in better ways than I will. But here's my question; do you really want a company that makes it's living off of selling ads and user-data(I'm also looking at you Meta - Instagram, FB, WhatsApp...) being your default browser?

  • It just works.
This should have been the first reason :) But seriously, Firefox works, and it works splendidly.
